Organic agriculture in the world

Over 31 million of hectares are currently devoted to organic farming around the world and it continues growing.

Worldwide retail sales of organics products have reached US $32,000 million. Organic farming is the fastest growing sector in the agribusiness activity.

World demand for organically produced food continues to rise and provides new business opportunities for farmers around the world.

In Europe retail sales grew from US $ 1,000 million in 1990 to US $12,000 millions in 2005. At the same time the demand continues to be high and constantly increasing.

 

Organic Products in México

In Mexico , the organic agriculture is growing sharply. The surface grew from 25,000 to more than 300,000 hectares during the last eight years. The Mexican organic products have been well accepted in the international market. Mexico is the largest producer of organic coffee and it is the world leader in this product.

The main regions with organic production are: Chiapas, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacan, B.C.S., Guerrero, Jalisco, Veracruz, and Sonora .

Around 85% of the Mexican organic production is exported. European Union, United Stated, and Canada as well as Asia are the principal markets. Incomes from organic production round 300 million of US dollars annually.

Currently, more than 60-70 thousand farmers are dedicated to organic products.

In Chiapas there are 102 thousand hectares dedicated to organic cultivation and 247 growers' organizations; 215 of them are about to be certified and 32 are about to be certified with products like: coffee, cocoa, honey bee, coconut, chayote, mango, potato, rambu-tan, papaya, tomato, and others.

The organic production has focused mainly on the cultivation of coffee in 47,250 hectares with 23,212 certified producers that are integrated in 125 organizations and generate 453 000 quintals of this grain.

Main organic products from Mexico to the world:
Coffee, vegetables, tomato, hot peppers, zucchini, cucumber, onion, garlic, chickpea, eggplant, melon, avocado, mango, banana, orange, pineapple, litchi, papaya, hibiscus flower, sesame, medicals and aromatic herbs, vanilla, cocoa, peanuts, soybean, safflower, ginger, cactus leaves, blue and white corn, honey bee, milk, dairy products, meats, egg, and others.
